Where we live

We're still not ready to post pictures of our new apartment, although we did some good work over the weekend and got several boxes unpacked. I think it's actually going to work out fairly well for us, although it is smaller than our old place. The good news is that this apartment uses space much more efficiently than the old place, so it doesn't seem too much smaller than our old apartment.

One thing we like about the new place is the neighborhood. It's a nice older neighborhood with lots of shady streets, and we've already started walking with Lindsay in the evenings when it's not too hot. The houses are small but pretty -- I would love to own a home here, but even the old dumpy ones cost more than a quarter of a million dollars, so that probably won't happen. Still, it's a fairly nice place to live, especially considering how cheap our rent is. We also like that the new place is close to the freeway, shopping, and restaurants. Our old apartment was very conveniently located for those things, so I'm glad we didn't lose that when we moved. The only thing I'm really sad about is not having a Little Caesar's Pizza place nearby. How will we survive without the $5 Hot-N-Ready pizzas?

However, the best part about our new place is the commute -- 5 minutes, maybe 10 if traffic is bad. I get to sleep in half an hour -- or even better, I can use the time I would have been driving for running or reading in the morning. Becca and I have been seriously considering where we want to live after I graduate. We love Nashville, but it's not the only possibility for us. One big factor for me is how long a commute I will have. Generally, you commute time to work/school is a trade-off for how cheap your mortgage/rent is. The down side of Nashville is that I will probably have to drive at least 45 minutes every morning if we get a house in a good school system where we can afford housing. And when I already know I will be working long hours in a law firm or office, I want to be able to be home as much as possible.

What about you guys? How long is your commute? Click on the poll in the sidebar to leave a response.
