Open Source Fonts
It's really hard to find good open source fonts. This is an attempt to centralize a few of the more usable fonts. Most fonts are licensed under the GPL, the OFL, or the Apache license.

The Libertine family of fonts are very professional-looking and refined. Linux Libertine has variants in bold, italic, bold italic, and small caps. This family of fonts also includes Biolinum, a non-linear sans-serif font that is still in development. The Linux Libertine font family is available under the GPL and the OFL.

The Droid family of fonts was created by Ascender, in conjunction with Google's Android project. It includes a serif font, a sans-serif font, and a basic Sans Mono that appears to be coding-friendly. A Droid Sans Condensed is also in the works. Some derivatives of these fonts may be under proprietary licensing, but the base fonts are released under an Apache 2.0 License, just like the rest of the Android project.

In 2007 the popular Linux vendor Red Hat produced three different fonts under the GPL. Liberation Serif is an alternative to Times New Roman, Liberation Sans is an alternative to Arial or Helvetica, and Liberation Mono is an alternative to Courier-type fonts.
